First Couples: Presidential Proposals

From the Kennedy's to the Clinton's, Diamonds On Web presents presidential marriage proposals that will make you smile- and might even give you an idea or two…

Emeralds and Diamonds

John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier first met in 1951 at a dinner party, and saw each other often for the next two years. A reporter for the Washington Times Herald, Jacqueline Bouvier also interviewed the young John F. Kennedy who was newly elected senator of Massachusetts. In 1953, when she returned from a trip to England in order to cover the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, Jacqueline was greeted by a proposal of marriage, which she accepted. John F. Kennedy chose a 2.88 carat diamond mounted next to a carat emerald for the engagement ring.

If at First You Don't Succeed…

James Earl Carter and Eleanor Rosalyn Smith Carter were married in July 1946, and celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last year. Rosalyn Smith refused Jimmy Carter's initial proposal of marriage, thinking it too early into their courtship. Luckily, two months later she accepted the second proposal from the young navy engineer and officer, and the couple have been married for over sixty years.

Originality Counts!

Another famous American president, Bill Clinton, married Hillary Rodham in 1975. The couple first met at Yale law school in 1970, and for their first date they went to a Mark Rothko exhibit at a Yale art gallery. Reportedly, Bill Clinton proposed to Hillary by saying, "I bought that house you like, so you better marry me because I can't live in it by myself". And while Clinton may have proposed with a house, rather than a ring, some years later, as the couple passed their thirty year anniversary, he presented Hillary with an awesome diamond ring- said to exceed 3 carats.
